How does self-hypnosis work?

I am interested in learning how to do self-hypnosis but I don’t know how. Anyone with experience in this area who can give me some guidelines?

Start with a focal point or thought and progressive relaxation – tense and relax your feet, legs… etc up to your head. You should be aware of your surroundings (not asleep), but it would require a lot of effort to actually move and do anything. At this point, you’re pretty much there. If you’re using self-hypnosis for a specific end (like quitting smoking) that thought and desire would be your focus, and you would continue with affirming thoughts while relaxed. If its just for the experience, something else works just as well. That would be the first step. There are a lot of other things you can do with self-hypnosis, and methods to get there, but this is one of the easiest. When you’re done, you can either wake yourself up – let the lethargy drain off, rather than force yourself to move or let yourself go to sleep.
